Types of Essays

Students in high school learn to write essays. Students are encouraged to write essays at the conclusion of each year. Essays are a type writing that outlines the author’s argument. Textual analysis essays often ask readers to analyze the meaning of a phrase, sentence, or text passage by using sources from a variety of disciplines. The student must be able to examine the significance of the text and establish the relationship between facts and ideas. Additionally the student should be able to defend his/her opinion. A textual analysis essay requires more ability to organize facts than an argumentative essay does. Furthermore some texts require students to explain how their viewpoint fits in with that of the entire field, much more so than an argumentative essay does.

Comparing and Contrasting essays compare and contrast two or more texts, and argue for or against them within the section that is assigned. Many college essays are written this way, but certain professors demand better results from their students. These professors require their students to be able to read and comprehend the essays they write, especially when they are competing for grade points. Some college instructors may view a compare and contrast essay as a way to attack, or even argument, against a person’s beliefs or positions. These essays are not appropriate for use in arguments or thesis statements, nor are they appropriate for any kind of review. Review essays are written to explain why an idea is superior over other ideas.

Expository essays, also known by the name narrative essays, are the most recent type of essay. As with other types of essays expository essays have to include specific information to support their argument.
